Dental Professional Highlight Series: Sandra Sikimic RDH

We're thrilled to highlight Sandra Sikimc as part of our Dental Professional Highlight Series. She is a firm believer in the ability dental hygienists have to positively impact their patients. Whether it's through education or a friendly face, hygienists occupy a place of influence in our lives and we are so grateful for them!

What is your favorite part about the Slate Electric Flosser?

It's extremely convenient for anyone who finds string floss tedious! I personally love the gum sweeps. It's a brilliant feature! It just levels up what flossing already does for your gum health.

What made you want to become a Dental professional?

The artistic side of myself in combination with my love of science/human body made it seem like the perfect profession. As a young teenager, I felt it was supposed to be my future and never wavered in desire.

What is the hardest part about being a Dental Professional?

Effectively influencing and encouraging someone whose primary language is not English. I'd love to learn so many more languages to be equally impactful to the multicultural population we have here.

What do you wish that your patients knew?

Dental decay is a multifactorial issue. It's not solely based on sugar consumption. There are many variables involved which are different from person to person. Customized care is crucial for prevention!

If you could give one dental hygiene tip, what would it be?

Floss the teeth you want to keep! And don't forget the backs of the last molars even though it's not an "in-between."

What is your favorite part about being a Dental Professional?

I think it's fantastic that dental hygienists get to work one-on-one with patients yet at the same time get to collaborate and work on a team with other professionals. It's the best of both worlds!

What is your favorite toothbrush?

Sonicare for electric brush and Curaprox for manual brush.

What is your favorite toothpaste?

I'm loving Twice with fluoride! For recommendations, I lean towards Sensodyne. Unfortunately, tooth sensitivity is very common and Sensodyne is consistently reliable!

What is your favorite mouthwash?

Opti-Rinse by Oral Science

What do you think is the most important thing about what you do?

We have the opportunity to change someone's day, make someone smile, influence someone's health, or even just listen to someone who may feel unheard! We are privileged to have the space to positively impact others (or as I call it - save lives)!

Anything else you want people to know?

No need to worry if you haven't brushed the minute before you walk in for your appointment! We can always tell what's old and new in there!

What is your favorite self-care tip?

It's easy to put yourself and your needs on the back burner (especially us moms). Don't forget you matter and your health matters. Care for yourself so you can care for others to the best of your ability!
