Slate is proud to partner with many incredible dental professionals. So in an effort to connect our customers with as much knowledge and expertise possible, we're beginning a dental professional highlight series on the blog! We hope that these interviews give you greater insight into the minds of practicing dentists and hygienists.
Meet Dr. Emily Dennison. Her wellness-based practice specializes in the WHY behind dental care. She believes that in order to get to the root of the problem, it’s important to understand how dental care interacts with other areas of the body and then begin making necessary changes.
What is your favorite part about the Slate Electric Flosser?
I love how easy it is. My teeth feel amazingly clean after! I also love the gum sweeps and the tongue scraper! I always tell my patients that neglecting to clean your tongue is like mopping the floors and not deep cleaning the giant rug in the middle of your mouth.
What made you want to become a dental professional?
I am very interested in the oral systemic connection. I think we have been conditioned to believe that the mouth and the rest of the body are separate entities. This couldn’t be further from the truth! I want to change this idea and this perspective. I want patients everywhere to see it all starts with the mouth.
What is the hardest part about being a Dental Professional?
The fear patients have about the dentist. Everyday I work hard to empower my patients to take charge of their oral health so we can stop doing conventional “drill and fill” dentistry, and focus on their wellness.
What do you wish that your patients knew?
Just because they’ve had cavities or gum disease in the past, that doesn’t mean it has to be their future. We can change the course of their disease.
If you could give one dental hygiene tip, what would it be?
Everyone knows you need to brush and floss, but tongue scraping is a real flex!
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the fact that patients aren’t actively seeking care because they’re fearful of the shame they might feel. I am motivated to change that. I never make my patients feel ashamed of their oral condition. It’s us against the disease!
What is your favorite part about being a Dental Professional?
I absolutely love changing the way someone feels about their oral health!
What is your favorite toothbrush?
OralB IO
What is your favorite toothpaste?
I love Carifree. I’m cavity prone. I avoid anything with SLS.
What do you think is the most important thing about what you do?
I'm passionate about educating my patients and helping them make decisions that impact their overall health by doing something as simple as flossing.
Is there anything else you want people to know?
I am a dentist who HATES drilling teeth. It’s a necessity in some instances but I would love to be a tooth doctor rather than a tooth mechanic.
