We're thrilled to spotlight Ask A Hygienist as part of our Dental Professional Highlight Series! Not only does her YouTube channel provide open, unbiased product reviews for all things oral health, but her platform is founded on a sincere desire to educate the public on how to better care for their teeth.
What is your favorite part about the Slate Electric Flosser?
You don't have to stick your fingers in your mouth! Plus it's battery-operated, so you don't have to look for a charger when the battery dies.
What made you want to become a Dental Professional?
First, I wanted to help people be healthy. I chose dentistry because my aunt was a dental assistant at the time, so I was familiar with the field. Later, I became really passionate about it when I realized I have a knack for motivating people to take care of their teeth.
What is the hardest part about being a Dental Professional?
In the dental office, the hardest part is only being able to help one mouth at a time. This is why I chose to expand to social platforms like Instagram and YouTube to share my knowledge and reach more people.
What do you wish that your patients knew?
So many dental problems are completely preventable! Yes, it takes work - like brushing, FLOSSING, a good diet, and lifestyle habits - but it's worth it!
If you could give one dental hygiene tip, what would it be?
No cutting corners! You can't rely just on products to magically keep your teeth healthy. If you don't floss and brush your teeth daily and scrape your tongue, the fanciest products in the world will not save your teeth.
What motivates you?
When I get positive responses from patients and viewers for my clinical work and YouTube content. Also, a good cup of coffee!
What is your favorite part about being a Dental Professional?
I love being able to share the knowledge I have with people who want to improve their oral health.
What is your favorite toothbrush?
I love my manual Nimbus compact toothbrush, and for electric, I prefer the Oral B Genius series with a Sensitive Gum Care brush head.
What is your favorite toothpaste?
Currently, I'm really liking Dr. Jen's toothpaste!
What is your favorite mouthwash?
I don't use mouthwash. It has recently been linked to hypertension because it can kill beneficial bacteria that helps regulate blood pressure.
What do you think is the most important thing about what you do?
Staying current with dental knowledge and providing people with my honest opinion about specific dental products, regimens, and trends.
Anything else you want people to know?
If I had to choose between brushing and flossing, I would choose flossing!
What's your favorite self-care tip?
Small steps go a long way. Don't overwhelm yourself with a complicated list of habits to improve. Start with one simple thing (like flossing!) and work on that until it's part of your routine, then move on to the next. Eventually, you can achieve a wholistic, wholesome lifestyle that started once upon a time with flossing every night.
