Braces do a lot of good work moving your teeth into place, but they also create the perfect hiding spots for food and plaque, which is why gums tend to get more sensitive and irritated during orthodontic treatment if flossing slips. The good news is that the method is simple once you know it: guide floss (or an orthodontic floss head) underneath the archwire at each tooth and work from your back molars toward the front. However, even with the correct technique, flossing braces with string floss can be frustrating. Using the Slate Flosser and our orthodontic floss heads turns a frustrating five-minute wrestling match into a sixty-second habit. Let us tell you how.
1. Why Braces Make Flossing So Much Harder
Every bracket and wire in your mouth is a new ledge for food to catch on. Regular floss has to be threaded underneath the archwire before it can even reach the gumline, and for most people, that means fumbling with a slippery piece of string, a mirror, and a lot of patience.
The result? Flossing is often the first habit to slip once braces go on, which is exactly the wrong time to skip it. With more surface area for plaque to collect, gums around brackets can become inflamed and sensitive far faster than they would otherwise.
2. The Traditional Tools (and Why They Fall Short)
If you've talked to your orthodontist about flossing with braces, you've probably heard about one of these three options:
-
Floss threaders — a small plastic loop that guides floss under the wire. Effective, but slow, and easy to lose in a bathroom drawer.
-
Manual orthodontic flossers — pre-shaped picks with a stiff end for threading. Faster than a loose threader, but still a two-handed, multi-step process for every single tooth.
-
Water flossers — great at rinsing loose debris, but they don't physically scrape plaque off the tooth surface the way floss does, which matters most right where brackets meet enamel.
None of these are bad tools. But when a task takes too long or feels burdensome, it's the first thing to get skipped on a busy morning or late evening, and with braces, it’s one habit you can't afford to drop.
3. The Slate Orthodontic Floss Head: Built for Wires, Not Around Them
This is exactly the problem our Slate Orthodontic Floss Heads were designed to solve. Instead of threading floss by hand, the orthodontic head is shaped to glide directly under the archwire, so you can move from tooth to tooth without re-threading a single time.
Paired with a Slate Pro or Slate Origin Electric Flosser, the orthodontic head adds gentle sonic vibration to the mix — helping loosen plaque along the bracket edges and gumline that a static piece of floss can miss. It's the same 3-in-1 approach (floss, gum sweep, and tongue scrape design) that Slate is known for, just reshaped to work with your braces instead of fighting them.
Patients with braces are some of the people who benefit the most from an easier flossing tool, because a lack of consistent flossing during orthodontic treatment is often why staining and cavities pop up once the braces come off.
4. A Simple Flossing Routine for Braces
Here's the routine we recommend for anyone in active orthodontic treatment:
-
Rinse first. A quick rinse with water loosens surface debris before you start, so your floss head has less to push through.
-
Start at the back and work forward. Guide the Slate Orthodontic Floss Head under the wire at your back molars, then move tooth by tooth toward the front.
-
Gently rock the floss head back and forth. This allows our custom-designed bracket sweeps to brush against the sides of your brackets and clean off extra debris.
-
Let the vibration do the work. Our sonic vibrations stimulate the gums and help dislodge plaque as you floss. Slowly slide the floss against the side of each tooth and below the gumline for optimal plaque removal.
-
Check the wire, not just the teeth. Braces trap food along the wire itself, so run the floss head along the length of the archwire, not only between teeth.
-
Finish by scraping your tongue. Braces catch a lot of excess bacteria so scraping your tongue at the end of each day can go a long way in keeping your teeth healthy and your breath fresh.
Done this way, a full flossing session takes about the same time as brushing — no threaders, no mirror, no repeated re-threading per tooth. It’s a small commitment with huge results. Check out our braces bundle to set yourself, or someone you love, up for orthodontic success.

5. Building the Habit That Lasts Through Treatment
Braces are temporary, but the habits you build while wearing them tend to stick. Patients who floss consistently during orthodontic treatment typically finish with healthier gums, fewer white spot marks around brackets, and an easier transition once the braces come off. The biggest predictor of whether a habit lasts isn't willpower; it's how easy the tool makes it to show up every day. Slate Flossers are built with ease and consistency in mind, so healthy habits feel more accessible.
Want to be able to floss your braces on-the-go? Our orthodontic floss heads are also compatible with the Slate Mini Flosser! The Mini is not electric, but its small size makes it ideal to keep in a backpack or purse and makes getting food out of braces easier than ever.
