Forever chemicals like PFAS, PTFE, or Teflon can be scary. It feels like they’re in everything. Many people have been swapping their usual food brands, kitchen tools, and even hygiene products for toxic-free alternatives. If you’re making this lifestyle shift, don’t forget to check your floss!
Why It Matters
You should absolutely be flossing. Studies have shown that healthy gums and teeth contribute dramatically to your body’s overall well-being. Unfortunately, not all floss is created equal. Many people reach for waxed floss because it slides between their teeth more easily, but what if that convenience comes with hidden risks?
Waxed floss often contains chemical coatings that may not be as harmless as they seem. If you’re using it daily, it’s important to understand what’s in your floss and whether it’s the best choice for your health.
Here’s what you need to know about the potential dangers of waxed floss and why choosing a better alternative can make a difference.
Say Goodbye to Waxed Floss
What Exactly is Waxed Floss?
Waxed floss is coated in a thin layer of wax, made from either synthetic or natural sources like beeswax, paraffin, or petroleum-based substances. Unfortunately, this also includes Teflon and PTFE, which create a slippery coating. This coating helps the floss glide more easily between tight teeth, reducing the chances of fraying or breaking.
While it may seem like a harmless improvement over traditional floss, the ingredients used in some waxed flosses raise concerns about their long-term impact on health.
Why Waxed Floss May Not Be the Best Choice
1. Some Waxed Floss Contains PFAS (Forever Chemicals)
Many leading floss brands use PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in their coatings to make the floss extra slippery. PFAS are the same chemicals found in nonstick cookware, water-resistant clothing, and fast-food packaging—and they’ve been linked to serious health concerns.
-
PFAS don’t break down in the body or environment, meaning they can accumulate over time.
-
Studies suggest exposure to high levels of PFAS may increase the risk of certain cancers, hormone disruption, and immune system issues.
-
The CDC and EPA have raised concerns about PFAS exposure through everyday products, including floss.
If your floss contains PTFE (a type of PFAS found in Teflon), you could be exposing your body to these chemicals every time you floss.
2. Waxed Floss Can Trap Harmful Bacteria
The sticky coating on waxed floss may also contribute to bacteria buildup. While the wax makes flossing easier, it can also cause plaque and bacteria to cling to the floss, increasing the risk of spreading bacteria rather than removing it.
-
If you reuse the same section of floss multiple times during a session, you could be moving bacteria from one tooth to another.
-
The waxy texture may hold onto bacteria longer, especially if floss isn’t stored properly.
3. Some Waxed Flosses Use Petroleum-Based Coatings
Certain types of waxed floss contain paraffin or other petroleum-based ingredients in their coating. While these are technically “safe” for use in oral care, they aren’t the cleanest option if you’re looking to avoid synthetic materials in your hygiene routine.
-
Petroleum-based waxes aren’t biodegradable, making them less environmentally friendly than other options.
-
Some people experience mild irritation from synthetic wax coatings.
4. Flossing Should Support Your Health—Not Compromise It
Floss is something you should be using every day, which means choosing the right floss is just as important as brushing with a safe toothpaste. If there’s a chance your floss contains questionable chemicals or coatings, it’s worth switching to a safer, chemical-free alternative.
